About RoofTake

A site built around one observation: the most useful fact after a hailstorm — the date it happened — is free public data that almost nobody puts in front of homeowners.

Why this exists

Weather radar has recorded every hail-producing storm cell over the United States for decades, and NOAA publishes the results for nothing. Meanwhile the homeowner standing in the driveway after a storm has no idea whether what just fell was big enough to matter, when the last one was, or whether the roofer knocking on the door three days later is telling the truth.

That gap is the whole reason for this site. Everything else — the quiz, the calculators, the insurance pages — exists because once you know the date, the next questions follow immediately.

What we actually do

  • Download NEXRAD Level-III hail signatures from NOAA for 50 US metro areas and publish them as plain, citable records.
  • Explain the parts of a hail claim that are genuinely confusing — depreciation, deductibles, cosmetic exclusions, appraisal — without pretending to be your lawyer.
  • Give away ten tools that run in your browser and collect nothing.
  • Say out loud, on its own page, how we are paid.

The rules we hold ourselves to

  1. Never present a model as data. If a number is an estimate, it says so, on the same screen, in the same visual weight.
  2. Cite the primary source next to the number, not in a footer.
  3. Publish the date of last update on every data claim.
  4. Do not publish a per-state legal table we cannot keep correct. Point people at their own policy and their own regulator instead.
  5. Disclose the commercial relationship at the point of the ask, not in the small print.
